Meet the Finalists: Champion of Diversity and Equality 2020

Formerly called Workplace Champion of Change the ‘Champion of Diversity & Equality Award’ recognises that we can’t get anywhere without champions. They are the ones devising and implementing real, structural change to foster diversity and equality in their business, region and beyond.
The Champion of Diversity & Equality Award is open to both businesses and individuals (male and female), and recognises those who have provided outstanding support and advocacy for women in the Australian wine industry.

Curly Haslam-Coates, Vintage Tasmania

Curly Haslam-Coates is a sparkling wine Goddess, wine educator, writer, Tasmanian food and drink ambassador and a believer in the importance of kindness and using your powers for good. Curly has worked in the food and drink industry for 25 years in both the UK and Tasmania.

Winning the Vintners Bursary in 2007 for WSET Level 3 Wine & Spirits qualification changed everything for Curly, as she also won some funding for a study trip of her choice – and part of that trip brought her to Tasmania for five days. Two years later she moved there and has taught the Wine & Spirit Education Trust qualifications ever since. Today, she wears many hats, but her focus is on education and inclusion.

Next up, she has plans to start a Not-For-Profit to raise up our marginalised wine professionals.

Helen Strachan, Pernod Ricard Winemakers

Helen grew up in the wine industry as the daughter of a grape grower and loves contributing to the wine industry as a Board member for Australian Grape and Wine & Chair of its Large Winemakers Committee & the National Wine Foundation. Helen is also a member of the Australian Wine Industry Joint Strategy, Crisis Response & Wine Australia Board Selection Committees and is the Wine Industry’s representative on the DrinkWise Board.

Helen is most proud of her role as a Diversity & Inclusion Ambassador for Pernod Ricard Winemakers, for receiving the ACC Australian Corporate Lawyer Award for Corporate Social Responsibility Excellence in 2019, and for being a finalist in the ‘Champion of Diversity & Equality’ in the 2020 Australian Women in Wine Awards.
